The Visit of the Diyawadana Nilame (Chief Custodian of the Sacred Tooth Relic) to KR International

Updated: 6 days ago

Pradeep Nilanga Dela, the Diyawadana Nilame (Chief Custodian) of the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic)—Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist site—visited KR International to discuss the revitalization of private-sector cooperation between South Korea and Sri Lanka.

The title "Diyawadana Nilame" represents the highest lay position for safeguarding the Sacred Tooth Relic and leading the Buddhist devotees. This role was a royal court position during the era of the Kingdom of Kandy, and today, it is primarily held by individuals of royal descent.

During the visit, Mr. Dela highlighted that there are currently 23,000 Sri Lankan workers in South Korea contributing to the economic development of both nations. He expressed deep interest in ensuring their safety during their stay and emphasized how the technical skills they acquire in Korea will contribute to Sri Lanka’s national development upon their return. He formally requested KR International’s attention and cooperation in supporting these efforts.

In addition to railway cooperation, KR International is pursuing trade in high-value Sri Lankan specialties, such as graphite. This visit is expected to serve as a major catalyst for strengthening private-sector ties and fostering mutual growth between the two countries.
